CCL License Renewal 101 - Faqs

Are you in a security role that requires you to carry a concealed weapon? Maybe you simply like to keep a weapon on you as needed for personal protection. In either case, obtaining your concealed carry license (CCL) is required in most states by law. While CCL licensure is not difficult to achieve, your license may not grant you permission to carry a concealed weapon long-term. You will likely have to seek CCL license renewal at some point to keep your license valid. Take a look at some of the most common questions associated with CCL license renewal

Will you have to attend training to have your CCL renewed?

You will typically have to take a CCL license renewal class to get your renewal. This class may be provided virtually or you may have to visit a local place to attend.

How often do you have to get your CCL renewed?

Each state has its own laws in place that dictate how long a CCL lasts after you initially obtain the license. In some states, you may have to get a renewal annually, but many states require a CCL renewal only every several years. For instance, in the state of Florida, renewal is only needed after seven years.

How much does it cost to get your CCL renewed?

Fees range from state to state to get your CCL license renewed, and the fees can be made up of payments due to different governing agents. For example, in Kentucky, there is a $40 fee due to the Kentucky State Police and a $20 fee to the sheriff when you apply for CCL renewal. In addition, in KY, if your license is already expired, there is an additional $15 fee.

When will your CCL license renewal be processed?

Once you have completed the necessary training and submitted the required documents, it may take some time for your application to be processed. Time frames vary depending on location, but you should not have to wait long for your renewal to be approved.

Can you get a lifetime CCL renewal?

Some states do offer a lifetime CCL license, which means you can essentially get your license one time and never have to pay for renewal again. While this can be a desirable path to take if you believe you will need to carry a concealed weapon for the long term, the fee associated with a lifetime license can be substantially more expensive.
